IÑT in Education

Mission statement
  • Promote development of information and communication technologies application in various stages of education.
  • Deliver new approaches and techniques in education through implementation of ICT tools.
  • Using ICT as a tool for incorporation modern technologies with other programs of OSI-AF.

Analysis of current situation
  • Very limited internet access in schools particularly for students
  • Very little serious curriculum work being done
  • Standard telephone connections mostly used for internet
  • Costs of multiple access prevent many schools from improving their systems
  • Lack of a coordinated approach to allocation of resources or evaluation of their use
  • Computer science teachers have outdated information and skills for use of modern computers and application

Achievements
  • Six teachers trained to continue program development in the regions
  • Two first level (user skills) trainings run for regional teachers from schools and universities
  • Establishment of links with national and international partners for cooperation in the area of ICT application in schools
  • Increased understanding of government officials in the area of application ICT in Education
  • Introduction of various international projects in the schools
  • Linking school children in Azeri schools to the global on-line community resources and communities
  • Various initiatives for development of inter-schools links: creation of network among schools and running inter-school events
  • Provision of computers for eleven schools and three lyceums through various OSI-AF Education and Information departments


Activities for 2002
  • Build and strengthen the capacity of the trainers
  • Increase cooperation and collaboration with other OSI-AF programs (Step by Step; Debate; RWCT; History Textbook Project) including training and software provision
  • Development of education network based on existing AZNET (existing network among educational institutions, created by OSI-AF together with partners) structure and schools with computers.
  • To stimulate community involvement to support existing centers for ICT in Education and thereby increase people's awareness and skills in the area through training
  • Design of modules for development of educational resources on CDs or on-line
  • Training schoolteachers in the area of educational program design and development


Planned future activities 2003
  • Establishment of coordination among donor organizations and the Ministry of Education
  • Development of strong trainers community both in Baku and regions for promotion of the skills and knowledge
  • Support of existing schools, connected to Internet (I*EARN, School Internet project)
  • Involvement of other donors to the area of ICT in education
  • Channel activities to content development rather than technical support of schools
