FOUNDATION'S LIFE BRIEFLY

At present, ten women and twenty man are working at the Open Society Institute-Assistance Foundation. So, women make the minority. Does it mean that women are losing to men in work?

Let's start the "monitoring" of an issue from …. the Executive Director. Though it doesn't make sense, as he is a men. Whereas, we are interested in our ladies' opinion. We are not going to reflect men's thoughts this time. Then… Financial Director! This person knows the answer to the main question - how much money the organization spends and why? Therefore, this person is suppose to be quite wise.

Zara - Head of the Finance Department:

How does your being a woman help when getting into any kind of difficulty at work?

When there is a psychological confrontation, of course, women solve it in a more successful way. Nevertheless, gender doesn't make any difference in professional issues; the main thing here is a work.

Who are the best finance specialists - women or men?

In our society, men do not like any superiority of women: this stems from our mentality. However, I believe that if women want, they can do any job better than men. The difficult state of our women is changing them. Women used to be gentler in the past. Now, they have to achieve everything counting on themselves. So, we are hardening. We are definitely not weaker financers than men. We can even leave them behind in the future.

Gultekin - Technical Director:

What do you think, whom can a woman manage better - another women or men?

I think there is no difference here. It depends on the professionalism of the manager. I have been working here since 1997. We have 12 people working at the Technical Department. Before coming here, I used to control over a bigger number of employees at MSF- Holland. If a manager is able to differentiate between the priorities at work and plans his work, then he will manage the employees in a proper way. It is very important to understand deeply the problem of every employee, direct him, not to demand to do more than he can, to create a good working condition for him, render the necessary assistance for increasing his competency, to explain to every employee that his job is of certain importance in the organization, and finally, to understand the employee. Both the women and men. Because, if an employee has some difficulty, he will deviate from his job, be thoughtful, which leads to the shortage in job quality. Therefore, some gentleness, sometimes a compromise is needed at work along with exactingness in order to create the spirit of team.

Narmina - Reception:

How do you think, is a woman director better, or a man?

ACI-YF is my seventh work place and the directors in all my previouis work places were men. I think, this is the right course of things. In general, genders must be different in this type of relations. On the other hand, my present director is a woman, and one of the reasons of my staying here is this. I think, she creates the comfort. Yes, comfort - this is what defines my staying. Gender is a very important issue. I cannot say a reason of why I would leave this work place... maybe, if I had much extra-money at home...

What if a young man would work instead of you? Would it change the quality of this job?

Do you really think that a young man would sit here? I personally don't think so. This job requires a lot of patience. You sit down here all day long and answer everybody's questions… Also, men have more ambitions, while this position has no prospects…

Shahkhanum - Member of the Technical Staff:

What is the main difference between women's and men's neatness?

Our guys are all the same for me. They are all very neat. I cannot complaint of them. Some of them are even too neat. This is my job. And everybody is accountable for a certain area of work in our orghanization. I wouldn't say that there is a big difference between men and women, let's say, fifty to fifty.

Gulnara - Coordinator of Women's Network Programs:

Can the gender inequality be seen among the OSI-AF employees?

There are no big differentiations in our office. Professionalism of people is more important. Both the women and men can do their job.

And how does the gender problem display itself among the guests coming to your office and generally, other persons whom you meet during the work process?

To my mind, presently women are more constructive. Life makes them to take many steps. Finally, they harden. While men, on the contrary, still cannot give up their patriarchal habits and sometimes the new provisions introduced by gender confuse them. Equality with women is hard for them. However, some time passing, they look around and change their mind. At the same time, it should be taken into account that equality of women and men is an issue of law and does not differentiate between these two genders.

At the end, we do not want to make any conclusions. Just adding one more fact that in this term of 2006, OSI-AF has ensured individual grants to 20 women and 26 men. The number of women here is also big. Let us believe them. Women have been the actual heads of our families for already several centuries. Their successes are evident: have they been unable to do this, their reign would not have lasted so long. Though we are living in a "patriarchat:.
